Research Money in U.S. about Childhood Obesity

First Lady Michelle OBAMA and the fight ahainst childhood obesity:

Michelle OBAMA's "Let's Move" campaign - with its emphasis on improving the quality of food and beverage in the schools and the community - is a welcome and historic step. Better Choices in schools will ultimately have limited effects if children do not have the ability to make better choices in the outside-school world.

IFHE members may be interested to know that huge amounts of federal dollars are going to obesity research through the U.S. Department of Agriculture

As the Executive Director of the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), I am pleased to invite your organization’s members to participate in our 101st Annual Conference & Expo, New Century for FCS:  New Challenges, New Solutions, June 24-26, 2010, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Your organisation’s members could make valuable contributions to the conference and benefit from exchanging information with professionals in family and consumer sciences and related fields.

As you may know, AAFCS' members are educators, researchers, administrators, Cooperative Extension educators, and other professionals in business and industry, not-for-profit organizations, and government who help individuals, families, and communities make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life.

The 101st Annual Conference is an excellent forum for collaboration among professionals who want to provide research and strategies for the most critical issues facing individuals, families, and communities.

I invite your organisation’s members to submit 101st Annual Conference theme-based educational session proposals on topics such as:

  • Partnerships and collaborations that help individuals, families, consumers, businesses, and our planet thrive
  • Recommendations for establishing home offices and businesses, especially for newly unemployed and retired professionals
  • Long-term healthcare challenges and potential solutions
  • Best uses of technology, including social media, in FCS classrooms and in marketing FCS programs
  • Research and strategies related to hunger issues in today's economic climate
  • Money management, saving, and retirement planning strategies in changing economic times
  • Strategies to help individuals and families advocate for their rights and stay informed on healthcare issues
  • Research and strategies related to the prevention and elimination of childhood obesity
  • Strategies for improving energy efficiency and increasing energy savings
  • Best uses of technology and databases in FCS research
  • Skills to help multigenerational families succeed.

The Call for Theme-Based Educational Session Proposals is posted online at www.aafcs.org/meetings/10/index.html under “Calls for Proposals.” It includes more sample proposal topics, guidelines for submission, and selection criteria.

All proposals must be submitted by using our online proposal submission system between September 19, 2009, and midnight on October 19, 2009.

I encourage you to post a link to the Call for Theme-Based Educational Session Proposals on your website and let your members know about this professional development opportunity through your newsletters, emails, or other communications.  In exchange for helping to publicize this opportunity, we would be happy to post information regarding your upcoming conference on our website and include important deadlines in our newsletter.

Also, if your organisation is interested in having a board or business meeting, meal function, or other type of session during the AAFCS Annual Conference, please be sure to read the appropriate page under “Calls for Proposals” at www.aafcs.org/meetings/10/index.html.  All proposals must be submitted by using our online proposal submission system (September 19 – October 19, 2009) and are subject to the availability of time and space.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss other ways to partner with AAFCS, please contact me at cjackson@aafcs.org or 703-706-4611 (my direct line).
